Why Choose an I-CAR Gold Class Repair Facility?

By: Anita Lafferty

The automotive repair business is a notoriously unregulated industry, which is why it is important to look for an auto body shop that values professionalism and education. That is why it is important to look for a shop that is I-CAR Gold Class Certified.

“Formed by the collision industry in 1979, I-CAR, the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair, is a not-for-profit training organization focused on education, knowledge and solutions for the Collision Repair Inter-Industry. The primary goal of I-CAR is complete and safe repairs for the ultimate benefit of the consumer.” (from http://www.i-car.com/html_pages/about/vision.shtml)

It is important for a shop to be I-CAR certified because it shows that they really care about providing the best and safest repair possible. I-CAR is funded primarily funded by student tuitions, so that means that it can remain unbiased. It also means that shops who have chosen to do this voluntary training are investing, in many cases, thousands of dollars a year to make sure that their technicians are up to speed on the most cutting edge repair solutions.

Training courses are structured around an individual’s role in the collision repair industry.  For example, an estimator takes courses related to assessing damage, creating a repair plan, and applying pricing. A refinish technician may be a painter who prepares and applies paint to a car may take courses on mixing color and tint, new waterborne paint techniques, and spray booth operations. There are 3 “ProLevels” for each role, and an expected knowledge for each level.

So the next time that you need a repair facility, choose a facility with highly trained technicians who care about the quality and safety of the repair. We make sure that all of our employees stay up to date on the latest repair techniques, even taking classes for specific OEM manufacturers such as Honda. We know that we need to stay current on new technologies for our customers’ safety as well as for the safety of our technicians. Choose an I-CAR Gold Class shop like AMM Collision Center.
