Safe driving tips for teens

By: Anita Lafferty

Teens can quickly forget what a big deal it is to be behind the wheel. Here are some tips to stay safe, and maybe some stuff you hadn’t thought about.

Clean your windshield. When the sun rises and sets, it can reflect off your dirty windshield and blind you.

Don’t swerve! If there is an animal or object in the road do not swerve to miss it. You may hit something else or someone else you couldn’t see. Stay in your lane and keep going until you can safely pull over.

Don’t use cruise control in the rain. With cruise control, we have a tendency to go into “auto-pilot, and not react as quickly. It is important to give driving your full attention, especially when it rains and roads are slick.

Stay off your cell phone! I know that you hear this all the time, but it is a huge factor in teen accidents. Also, it is illegal to text and drive in Austin, TX. That text message can wait 10 minutes for you to get to your destination. Also, make sure that you know where you are going before you leave; checking your map on your phone is just as distracting as texting.

I chose to share these specific tips because we have seen these little things have dire consequences for teen drivers. Driving is a big responsibility, take it seriously.
